Municipal Courts are the judicial branch of city government. In addition, the Municipal Court is part of the state judicial system. Municipal Courts hear Class C Misdemeanor criminal cases, including traffic violations, for which the maximum fine, upon conviction, does not exceed $500, and for which no jail sentence may be assessed. They also hear cases involving violation of city ordinances, which may have fines up to $2,000 for certain offenses. The Municipal Court does not have jurisdiction for small claims, driver’s license suspension hearings, medical revocation hearings or perform marriage ceremonies. These types of matters are handled in the Justice of the Peace courts.

When you receive a citation, the options you have to resolve your case can vary depending on different factors. For general information about court procedures see Municipal Court Procedures for Adults or Municipal Court Procedures for Juveniles (under age 17). This information is not a substitute for legal or other professional advice. You should consult an attorney to advise you on your case. If you have questions about your best course of action, what plea you should enter, your rights, or the consequence of a conviction of the offense for which you are charged you should contact an attorney. Neither the clerk, judge nor prosecutor can give you legal advice.

You must notify the Municipal Court of your intentions on or before the appearance date shown on the citation.

Failure to respond to a Citation may result in the issuance of a warrant of arrest at an additional fee and denial of renewal of your driver's license by the Department of Public Safety and assessment of additional fees.

If you wish to make a payment by mail, submit your payment along with the plea form that is sent with your courtesy initial appearance letter, or with the reply form on the back of the pink copy of your Citation.
