The City of Sunset Valley was incorporated in 1954. At that time, the City of Austin seemed far away. Over the past 60 years the City of Austin has grown up around the City of Sunset Valley. Sunset Valley has adapted to the surge in development pushing further westward from the City of Austin.

The first major development began in the early 1990's with the construction of the Marketfair Shopping Center. The first store to open was Ross Dress for Less and remains open to this day. The development of Marketfair sparked a series of developments as the area around Brodie Lane and Highway 290 began to urbanize. In the mid 90's the city became involved in a lawsuit with the Weaver Family as they planned to subdivided 280 acres of the city. This development included shopping centers, restaurants, and single family neighborhoods. The City reached an agreement with the Weaver's in 1996 that laid out the framework of much of what we see today in Sunset Valley.
