Special Purpose District

Authority

A Crime Control and Prevention District is a special purpose district created for the purpose of improving crime prevention and reducing crime. In 1989, the Texas Legislature recognized that smaller cities within large metropolitan areas are greatly impacted by "big city" crime without the "big city" resources to fight the crime problems they face. The Legislature passed the Crime Control and Prevention District Act to enable cities to create a special district that can collect a sales tax specifically dedicated to crime control and reduction.

In the summer of 2016, the City of Sunset Valley initiated actions to establish the Sunset Valley Crime Control and Prevention District, with the primary and sole stated goal to construct new police facilities.

Budget

A Sales Tax Rate of .00125 or .125% was approved by the voters to support the budget. The proposed budget will allocate 100% of sales tax revenue funding to the construction of a new police facility and there will be 0% allocated to Administration. There will be administrative costs by the City of Sunset Valley in support of the District estimated not to exceed $5,000 per year. The City will provide funding for the construction of the New Police Facility in addition to the funding provided by the Crime Control Plan and Budget Plan. The effectiveness of this Strategy will be evaluated by the timely completion of a New Police Facility.
