City Standing Committees
In an effort to handle many of the demands imposed on city government, the City Council appoints advisory committees, also called standing committees. The committees are organized by service or function and serve in an advisory capacity to assist and make recommendations to Council and department heads. They research, develop, implement, and evaluate policies, programs, and projects in accordance with approved Council goals. Each Council Member serves as the Council Liaison of a standing committee. Appointments are made at the first regular meeting following the city elections or as soon thereafter as possible. Appointments to standing committees are for a term of one (1) year.
Each committee is comprised of a minimum of at least five (5) regular members. Additional appointments as alternate members may also be made. All regular and alternate members serving on a committee must be a resident of the City. One (1) honorary member who is not a resident of the City, but may have experience in a related field that provides a valuable resource to the Committee, may by appointed.
Notices of upcoming Committee/Commission meetings are posted in accordance with the Texas Open Meetings Act. However, the Committees and the Arts Commission are not subject to the Open Meetings Act for the sole purpose of allowing them to meet and collaborate either in a hybrid or virtual format. All other stipulations of the Texas Open Meetings Act will still apply to notice, posting, and quorum, etc.
The City Committees are:
- Budget and Finance
- Community and Economic Development
- Planning and Environmental Committee
- Public Safety Committee
- Public Works Committee
Meetings of these committees are open to the public, and may be held in-person at the City Facilities or virtually.
