The Public Works & Environmental Services Department is responsible for maintaining all of the City’s infrastructure, public lands and other assets. The Public Works Department provides water, wastewater, solid waste, drainage, streets, parks, facilities, and greenspace maintenance services throughout the City. The City of Sunset Valley has an extensive amount of infrastructure and amenities packed into one square mile. The Public Works & Environmental Services Department strives to make Sunset Valley a wonderful place to live and visit.

The City has over 270 acres of publicly accessible greenspaces and conservation areas. The City maintains the open spaces and performs necessary wildlife management activities. The Public Works Department also maintains firebreaks in these areas. There are over 10 miles of trails throughout the City. The City is also connected with the Regional Violet Crown Trail System.

The City maintains three playground areas: Valley Creek Park, City Hall Nature Play Area, and the Recreational Venue by the Homestead Shopping Center. The Public Works Department also maintains over 10 water quality ponds and stormwater facilities. The Public Works Department maintains ditches and creek beds to maintain proper drainage around the City.

The City also has a long history of urban forestry programs and has been a Tree City USA for over 25 years.  From Oak Wilt Management to community habitat programs, the Public Works Department offers a variety of programs to residents of Sunset Valley.

The City of Sunset Valley is a Public Water System and provides water distribution and wastewater collection services. The City receives water from the City of Austin and distributes it to the residents and businesses throughout the City. The wastewater also passes through Sunset Valley to be treated at facilities within the City of Austin. The City has over seven miles of water lines, five miles of wastewater lines, and one lift station it must maintain as part of the distribution and collection system. The water system is monitored daily to comply with the standards set forth by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. The Public Works Department monitors and maintains the system including cross connection control, installing and reading meters, and performing repairs as necessary. The Public Works Department also maintains the fire hydrants that provide fire protection for the City.Texas Disposal Systems provides solid waste services. The Public Works Department maintains the City's storage yard for disposal of brush and other items.

The City has over 6 miles of streets and right of ways. There are over 1,300 public trees along these streets that the City monitors and maintains. The City maintains streets through preventative maintenance activities. This includes crack sealing city streets.
