City of Sunset Valley’s WaterWise Landscaping rebate helps residents convert existing turf to native prairie and native plant beds. This rebate may be able to be combined with Austin Water’s Waterwise Landscape Rebate. Please check Austin Water’s page for more details on their program.
Water Savings
- Native and adapted landscaping uses less water than traditional turf, saving you money and conserving a precious resource
Rebate Amount
- Up to $10,000 (lifetime cap per residential address
- 50% cost of design, materials and installation
- Rebates may not exceed the total project costs.
Eligibility
- Applicant
- Be a customer of City of Sunset Valley Utilities. Apply for pre-approval prior to purchasing or installing any project materials.
- Apply for pre-approval prior to purchasing or installing any project materials.
- Agree to pre and post inspection by City of Sunset Valley Public Works Department.
Conversion Area
- A minimum of 500 square feet of turf converted unless resident resides in the Sunset Valley Villas.
Requirements
- 75% of the area must have healthy turf grass at the time of application.
- Must use native/adapted species from the City of Austin’s Grow Green Plant Guide.(Substitutions must be approved by the City of Sunset Valley)
- Cannot replace turf grass with another type of turf grass.
- Turf to native tall/midgrass prairie is allowed.
- Must have at least 50% plant cover (at maturity) in planting areas.
- Plants installed between March 15th -May 15th or from September 15th -November 15th
- Turf areas being replaced with non-irrigated areas (rock/gravel) do not require 50% plant cover.
- Plant beds must be top dressed with at least 2-3 inches of organic mulch.
- Existing irrigation must be capped off or changed to drip or low-use bubblers.
- No new permanent irrigation system may be installed in the conversion area.
- Gravel patios may not be over 200 square feet within the area. Gravel/rock may be used as part of the landscape feature.
- No gravel between the sidewalk and street.
- No water features allowed.
- It is the responsibility of the homeowner to comply with any applicable homeowner association (HOA) requirements.
Checklist
- Meet Eligibility Requirements
- Submit Application before purchasing or installing any materials
- Pre-installation Photos (show all of the area being converted)
- Site Plan- property lines, existing plants, locations/dimensions of buildings, streets, sidewalks, driveways, and proposed conversion area. Include accurate square footage of conversion area.
- Planting Plan- list the type of plants you will use, mature spread, and proposed location.
- Complete a pre-inspection (if required)
- Submit Rebate Application to and all required documents to:

- Obtain pre-approval letter from Sunset Valley Public Works
- Once pre-approval is received:
- Buy materials and convert area to WaterWise Landscape
- Plant materials during planting season listed above.
- Submit photos of finished work as well as itemized/dated/paid in full receipts for the project materials/installation.
- Complete a post-inspection (if required)
- Rebate check should arrive within 3-4 weeks.
