In 2001, Ann Gault and Betty Dunn presented plans to the Sunset Valley City Council for a city community organic garden. By the summer of 2002, the City paid for an 8-foot high field fence around a 100 ft. x 80 ft. area located behind City Hall adjacent to city conservation land. The City provided some of the original raised beds and filled them with soil. While many of today’s more than two dozen planting beds were built by members, the City’s Summer Teen Program has made some really nice beds for the Garden as well. Water lines were installed by the City, and to this day, the City furnishes the water and provides free mulch.
There is a community herb bed in the garden available to any Sunset Valley resident to come pick the herbs, and any additional produce that is left on the table in the middle of the garden is available for any Sunset Valley resident to enjoy. Extra produce is also donated to homebound neighbors who do not have access to fresh food. This harvest sharing has permitted the garden to become a member of the Sustainable Food Center under their Spread the Harvest program
The Garden cooperates with Sunset Valley Elementary School’s Garden Club working with the school to guide the children in the importance of fresh food, learning positive environmental practices, and being good stewards of our earth.
The Sunset Valley Community Organic Garden is open to any Sunset Valley resident who would like to enjoy deer-proof, organic gardening in raised beds. A 4 ft. x 8 ft. bed is only $40.00 per year and beds are available for children at no cost. Beds are assigned each Spring.
