Council Meetings

The Sunset Valley City Council meets on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month (unless Council formally changes the meeting dates) in City Hall, 3205 Jones Road. Meetings generally begin at 6 PM, and may not go past 10 PM. Citizens can participate in the Council meetings by coming to the meeting, watching on line via livestreaming, or after the meeting watching the video recording. Access the livestreaming and recordings via the City's YouTube Channel.

Addressing the Council and Public Comments

  • Public comments are allowed at a designated time near the start of the agenda. Anyone may sign up to speak at this time regarding any topic related to the City of Sunset Valley or an item on the agenda. Any comments regarding an item not on the agenda may not be acted on by the City Council due to open meetings requirements; Council members and/or staff may respond with any factual responses (the Council may not deliberate on items not posted on the agenda).
  • When addressing the Council, you must first to come to the podium so that your comments can be heard through our public address system and for our livestreaming webcast (and recording). Each speaker is required to state their name and address at the beginning of any comments.
  • You may comment on any item on the agenda at the opening Citizen Comment section or during the meeting when the specific agenda item is up for consideration by the Council. In most circumstances, the Council will not discuss the agenda item during the Citizen Comment section.
  • During each agenda item, the City Council will accept comments following the presentation on the item. Each person speaking is limited to four minutes or less. Following Public Comment, the Council members will deliberate the agenda item. In the event that there are citizens desire to make additional comments, the Council will allow another round of citizen comments following the Council deliberation.
  • If there is a “spokesperson” to represent a group on an issue, it would be helpful to have one person speak with the acknowledgement of those being represented rather than have several people address the Council and present the same information multiple times.

We value your time and interest in your City

  • Regularly scheduled City Council meetings begin at 6 pm with a goal of completing by 9 p.m. unless there is significant business that requires the meeting to extend until 10 p.m. This will avoid late night discussions where most citizens are unable to attend.
  • We will use “Time Certain” items whenever possible to allow citizens to know exactly when significant issues or public hearings will take place.
  • Back up materials for the meeting on the city website in advance of the meeting to allow citizens and interested parties to review all the information in advance of the meeting. The better prepared we all are, the smoother the meetings will go.
  • If an agenda item cannot be acted on within a reasonable amount of time or if additional public input is needed, the City Council may choose to postpone action until a later meeting.

We welcome your comments and want you to be informed

  • If you have a comment or suggestion, but do not want to appear before the City Council, please send an email to the Mayor, City Council member or city staff.
  • We have email lists for all city committees and also several other specific email lists (like City Council agendas and electronic City Newsletter). Visit the city’s website to sign up for any of these or to learn more about your city government.
